"So this is a legacy wheelchair," Hanrahan said with a laugh.
Like many artists and others living on the financial edge, Hanrahan does not have health insurance. She faces months of doctor visits and physical therapy sessions, some of which will be covered by the Ventura County Health Care Agency's ACE program.

She has since designed tour T shirts for Jimmy Buffett and the band Chicago, served on the board of directors for the San Buenaventura Artists' Union, worked with students in Ventura and Santa Maria to paint anti tobacco murals, exhibited at the original Studio Channel Islands on the CSU Channel Islands campus in Camarillo and teamed with Mora to create the Tortilla Flats mural, a public art piece now installed on Figueroa Street near the Ventura County Fairgrounds.
"MB is living testimony that you can forge your own way and be your own person and that's an important message for kids regardless of whether they're in an art class," Granata said. "She is the epitome of individuality."
The group of supporters includes fellow artists, principals at the schools where Hanrahan teaches, owners of businesses for whom she has created murals and at least one politician. Announcing details of the accident at a recent meeting, Ventura City Council member Brian Brennan described Hanrahan as one of the city's "gems."

The outpouring of help is the result of the combination of "MB's art and what she does for the community," Polly Hoganson said. "She reaches and interacts with so many different socioeconomic levels, from street people to people who pay her thousands for a commissioned piece of art. She's in the schools, she's worked with kids in correctional facilities. She has a lot of circles and cliques, if you like."
